Billy said: "I'm over the moon to
have my image secure 1st place in the Scottish Wildlife Behaviour
category at this year's Scottish Nature Photography Awards. I really
didn’t expect this result! I'm an
amateur underwater photographer from Shetland who has been obsessed with
marine life from a young age. Shetland is a great place to feel close to
nature above and below the waves.
"This image was taken in Lerwick harbour. The shoal was feeding on small invertebrates on the surface. They were so engrossed in the opportunity to feed that they didn’t seem bothered by my presence. I love trying to take images of the sometimes overlooked or common species and try to show them in their best light. Watching these juvenile fish feeding reminded me of starling murmurations and this flowing, synchronised shoal was equally mesmerising. Using a slow shutter speed helped to convey the frenzied motion of the fish as they darted about trying to catch a tasty morsel."
