Graham said: "This image was taken on a morning that will live long in the memory. In early winter, and after a few days of deep cold frosts, everything was covered in hoar frost. This forms when the water vapour in the air comes into contact with solid surfaces that are already below freezing point. Ice crystals form immediately and continue to grow as more water vapour is frozen. An inversion meant that I would have to climb higher through the forest to find this scene. The mist was wonderfully atmospheric, but breaking through to see this world of crystallised statues against the deep blue sky was just mesmerising. Amongst many images of the birch forest I took that day, this vision looking directly up is always one that draws my eye - finding a group of trees that compose well together as their frozen tendril-like branches reach out towards a window of blue, an image I often capture from lying on my back.

"I am thrilled with winning the Abstract category - celebrating perspectives and visions that challenge our prescribed notions and classic views of nature, and hopefully transporting the viewer to the forest floor on a silent, still and crisp winter morning."
