James said: "I was extremely pleased to receive the wonderful news that my image had been awarded 1st place in the Scottish Botanical Category. Each year I admire the winning and shortlisted images in this competition, so I am incredibly thankful that the judges awarded my image this time.

"This image of thongweed (Himanthalia elongata) was taken in the shallows at Fifeness, during a lovely summer evening dive in July 2024. The rocky reefs along the shore at Fifeness are full of many different species of seaweeds and kelp, which make for wonderful scenic dives in the bright summer evenings. While pointing my camera almost vertically to capture the Snell’s window I waited for the gentle swell to move the thongweed into the frame."
